In the traditional IT organization, application developers have been relying on infrastructure for redundancy and availability for as long as most of us can remember. Applications and developers rely on things like clustered servers, redundant storage, and virtualization to provide redundancy. In a cloud-centric delivery model, this reliance on infrastructure redundancy needs to change. Developers need to embrace the idea that they are responsible for building redundancy into the application.

For an application architecture to be ready for this changing world, it must manage its own resiliency. The application can no longer rely on the underlying infrastructure. Instead, it must be entirely independent. Whether running your own infrastructure or using someone else's, the application has to own its availability. Only then can we fully embrace the change that is happening in IT today.
