OpenFlow is the protocol heavily promoted by the Open Networking Foundation, as well as Open Daylight and Open Networking Operating System projects as the cornerstone of next-generation controller-based networking. In this workshop, we'll describes the technical details from an objective point of view.

We'll start with the principles of operation and separation of the control and data planes, continue with the OpenFlow forwarding model (including multi-table operations and output groups), and examine the various OpenFlow deployment models and real-life implementations.

Finally, we'll look at the scalability challenges of OpenFlow - from hardware limitations to state explosion, control plane scalability, and lack of shared vision.

After attending this workshop you'll be able to:

    • Understand the principles and limitations of OpenFlow
    • Understand how OpenFlow controllers perform tasks like topology discovery, dynamic MAC learning and fast reroute
    • Identify potential bottlenecks in network devices and OpenFlow controllers and evaluate whether they might impact your production deployment
    • Select the optimal OpenFlow deployment strategy for your network

    Who should attend:
This workshop is appropriate for network architects, designers and deployment/operations engineers who have to understand the potential impacts of OpenFlow or are already planning to introduce OpenFlow into their production networks.
